I have been in the field of Carnatic Music since half-a-century.
Interestingly, I am and was not a performer. I remained and still remain a teacher. I know that my thoughts and ideas about music have always been criticized heavily. I was even scoffed at by many, for being a perfectionist.
A few weeks back, I received a call from a friend, saying that his cousin wants to learn from me. I nodded. The boy has been learning music from someone in Bangalore, for 7 years. The boy, it seems, had performed concerts in and around Bangalore.
I felt happy, because teaching someone who was taught music for 7 years is quite easy and that too a seasoned performer!!
The boy came to me and I asked him to sing the Sapta Tala Alankarams. He was all at sea. I prompted him with Dhruva Tala Alankaram. He couldn’t sing even after being prompted.
“Ok. Then sing the Adi Tala Varnam in Mohanam.”
He stuttered and stammered and started gazing at me.
I had to say, “Look, do not get offended. I think I have to start teaching you from scrap. I cannot make you sing concerts without even being taught the basics properly.”
I don’t understand how this boy has been singing concerts for 3 years!!
